- [Amanda Gorman](https://www.beverlyhaydenart.com/c/products/amanda-gorman): Amanda Gorman. As we’ve been celebrating Black Excellence through the month of June, my thoughts kept drifting to poet activist Amanda Gorman and her explosion into my consciousness and into the hearts of many Americans at the inauguration earlier this year. Her inaugural poem “The Hill We Climb” blew me away. Since then, I can’t get enough of what she’s written. She’s making waves with her words - even reciting the only poem ever at a Super Bowl game! Poetry at a football game?! This is culture shifting stuff! Because she’s been so much on my mind, I was inspired to create this portrait of her and add it to my group of “heroes.” The background I've used for this portrait is a 1957 civil rights comic that tells the Story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Just under and to the left of Amanda's chin, you can see Rosa Parks being "asked" to give up her seat. Amanda's poetry focuses on issues of oppression, feminism, race, and marginalization and her contributions both through her poetry, but equally through her activism strike me as heroic. So that's why I chose to use not only this particular comic for the background of her portrait, but this particular section of it where Rosa Parks was featured. - Reads beautifully both from across the room and up close. It can also become a birthday wheel to mark a significant milestone. You just tell me about your family (I'll help spark ideas for you) and I'll design a wheel all about you. On this particular wheel, each wedge tells the couple's history as related to me by the daughter who commissioned it for her parents' 50th Anniversary. She told me that she was born in Burbank, CA and he was born in Missouri. When he was a child, his parents loaded the family in the car and drove Route 66 on their move to California. The couple went to the same high school but ran in different social circles so they didn't get to know each other then. But at a college football game many years later, they recognized each other, started talking and began to date. They got married, bought their first house and started their family (see the wedge with the house and family tree). The story goes on but you get the idea. Although President Obama was not yet alive for the 1950s civil rights movement, much of the work done during his presidency and after with his Organizing for Action and All on the Line initiatives carries that work into the present day. As such, the use of this civil rights comic as a portrait backdrop seemed fitting. Coordinating the particular content of the comic to this portrait, I incorporated the crowd of people (actually Rosa Parks on the bus!) onto the President’s chest since as president, he acted on behalf of all Americans. I was very particular about the content of the background comic for the RBG piece. The women featured here are "can do" kind of women. One is going to work at a fish cannery to do research! This seemed quite unusual for a woman of that time period. I figured she and Ruth might be friends. Because this is a romance comic, the woman naturally finds love but since Ruth and her husband and a very loving relationship (and he was quite supportive of her career), I figured she would approve this work/life balance. I also liked that, in contrast to most of the other comics featured in this body of work which are very balanced between the number of women and men present, this particular story was very woman-centric. Given all that dear RBG has done for women's rights throughout her career, having women more prominently featured in her background seemed appropriate. And of course I have painted her with her famous dissent collar which many of us are grateful that she wears a lot these days. Thank you RBG for all you have done and continue to do for us. I coordinate the background content with each painting so in this portrait, several frames of the comic reference walking as John Lewis did across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma on several prominent occasions. Much of the story of the Montgomery Bus Boycott is told in the background of John Lewis’ portrait - events that I imagined would elicit the expression featured in the painting and cause him to hold his heart. The outline of his head is placed just so that it appears that the comic version of Dr. Martin Luther King is preaching in his ear.
